The Exchange Program Between Indonesia and Mexico

The exchange program is a part of the Social Forestry Academy (SFA) creative learning model developed by LATIN, which aims to strengthen Social Forestry insights, knowledge, and practices for the younger generation by exchanging information between countries. The exchange program aims at improving Social Forestry governance in each participating country (Indonesia & Mexico) by strengthening the knowledge and skills of the younger generation (including the government) and practitioners through an inter-generational learning approach. LATIN believes that the exchange program will be able to develop collaboration and cooperation between parties – between countries, strengthen the collective knowledge, skills and impact a broader context. It will snowball effect for future, continuous/sustainable and better social forestry achievements.

LATIN established a Social Forestry Research Scholarship in November 2023 to provide research collaboration opportunities and financial support for Social Forestry researchers who are qualified to conduct research and produce paper in contribution to community forest management.

Eligibility

Priority 1. Indonesian citizen
Priority 2. Age under 35 years
Priority 3. Willing to take part in the exchange program according to the specified time
Priority 4. Willing to take part in the study circle program
Priority 5. Willing to write an international publication with latin’s team
Priority 6. English language qualification (proven by english proficiency test or writing sample)

Research Topics

The topic of the applicant’s research must be aligned with LATIN’s overarching theme of Social Forestry. Moreover, priority research topics must fall within the exchange program priority:

Research Questions:

1. What are the significant achievements of Social Forestry in Mexico and Indonesia? What were the most significant changes, obstacles, and challenges? Why did it happen?

2. How is the process of transferring SF knowledge and skills across generations in these two countries? (inter-generational learning), What’s the lesson? What are the main obstacles and challenges?

Potential Topics to be Learnt:

1. SF Regulation and Policy
2. SF Governance (right & access, Land reforms, Institutional mechanism, planning and implementation model, evaluation & impacts assessment model)
3. Community movement in SF (Social capital, community organizing, networking)
4. Intergenerational approach in SF study
5. Sustainable economic in SF
6. Gender in SF
7. Conflicts management in SF

Scholarship Benefits

Entitlements of the Social Forestry Research Fellowship is provided for the duration of this research program up to 3 weeks with LATIN. In addition to being fully funded, the Researcher will get an international network of
social forestry research and international paper publication.

Application Procedure

Applicants must fill out online The Social Forestry Research Scholarship application form and upload a copy of all required documents.

The required documents to be submitted should be in English:

1. Letter of application for the research scholarship which should be addressed to the LATIN Executive Director;
2. Official endorsement or letter of recommendation from the employer (if employed);
3. Write an english essay about social forestry in indonesia (2-3 pages);
4. Motivation letter;
5. Curriculum vitae;
6. Letter from the applicant certifying that he/she is not receiving any other research grant from any other institution. If partial funding has been obtained from other sources, the applicant must submit a certification
from the funding agency indicating the grant amount and items covered by the grant, as well as proof that there will be no conflict with the funding agency when applying for another funding/scholarship;
