Background

The Adaptation Fund finances projects and programs that help vulnerable communities in developing countries adapt and build resilience to climate change. Initiatives are country-led and based on local needs. The Fund was created in 2001 under the Conference of Parties and launched in 2007. It formally serves the Paris Climate Agreement and pioneered an innovative climate finance mechanism referred to as ‘Direct Access’, which empowers developing countries to access financing directly from the Fund through national institutions and build country ownership in adaptation.

The Fund has committed nearly US$ 800 million for climate change adaptation and resilience activities to date, including 115 concrete projects on the ground across adaptation sectors such as coastal zone management, sustainable agriculture, food security, rural and urban development, water management, disaster risk reduction, forests, and others.

The Adaptation Fund Board Secretariat is seeking a short-term communications consultant with a strong writing background and broad working knowledge of digital, emerging and traditional communications platforms. Includes researching, writing and developing written and multimedia stories, flyers, talking points, social media campaigns, and promoting events to help raise awareness for the Fund’s programmes and unique role in the UN climate finance landscape.

This is a virtual position.

Scope of Work

The consultant will report to the Communications Officer and be expected to perform the following tasks:

1) Research, conduct interviews, write and develop accurate and engaging blogs, stories, media releases, video/podcast scripts, e-newsletters, flyers, brochures, posters, talking points, social media posts and/or other web content as needed to highlight the Fund’s work; translate sometimes highly technical information into user-friendly relatable content for wide public audiences.

2) Support, develop and facilitate production and dissemination of content; take, gather and prepare photos and supporting visuals, as well as post content to website, social media and email-sharing networks.

3) Assist with and support development and dissemination of web and social media posts and related materials across a variety of Adaptation Fund channels, including the Fund’s website, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Flickr, YouTube, SoundCloud, Donation page and other emerging channels.

4) Provide ongoing support to social media by posting regularly across channels, creating Twitter and Facebook cards periodically to highlight key milestones, and tracking and promoting special environmental days high-level Fund events and activities.

5) Help populate and promote key calendar events through website and social media; help maintain website updated, intuitive and user-friendly.

6) Support development and review of videos and other multimedia products such as podcasts and posting and dissemination of them to Fund websites and social media channels.

7) Support development of a variety of other communications products such as brochures, briefing notes, brochures, flyers, speeches, graphics and branded promotional materials, correspondence, and presentations.

8) Support development or participation in virtual conferences and meetings, and ongoing communication with a variety of stakeholders, including Fund partners, NGOs, knowledge experts, donors, beneficiaries, Board members, the larger international climate space, media and public.

9) Track, identify and cross-promote external media and partner stories about the Fund on the website, social media and e-newsletters. Assist with media outreach, as needed.

10) Assist in planning and implementation of large-scale events, fundraising goals, photo/video competitions and campaigns at high-profile climate change conferences, as needed.

11) Routinely research AF projects, policies, strategies, documents and partnerships, and communicate with AF staff to ensure accuracy of often complex information when sharing in user-friendly communications formats.

12) Assist with media monitoring and supporting web and social media metrics and other communications goals, as well as developing webinars, online surveys and communications trainings, as needed.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in communications, journalism or marketing. Master’s degree in communications or journalism a plus. Interest in climate change, sustainable development, international or environmental studies valued. Comfort level with WordPress and visual layouts a plus.

  • Minimum five to eight years of working experience in communications and/or journalism field, with high comfort level in storywriting and working across diverse communications platforms.
  • Experience with branding, graphics, social media and communications campaigns.
  • Basic visual website design and content management skills, such as familiarity with WordPress Pro.
  • Excellent command and communications of written and spoken English, including proven experience developing and writing stories, themed brochures and multimedia products.
  • Familiarity with climate change issues and UN Framework Convention on Climate Change at the international level a plus.
  • Ability to efficiently and accurately communicate often complex and technical ideas to a lay audience through visually engaging stories and other communications products.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent research abilities and experience with interviewing subject matter experts a plus.
  • Experience with taking photographs or video and/or incorporating compelling visual graphics into communications materials a plus.
  • Ability to work well with diverse team members and multitask in high-pressure environments to produce quality, accurate work on tight deadlines.
  • Interest in climate change, environmental and/or international development issues a plus.

Duration

25 days from April 2021 to June 2021, with opportunity to extend based on performance and need.
